SECOND CHANCE GEMS - THE NEW COLLECTION

SECOND CHANCE GEMS - THE NEW COLLECTION

Introducing 'Second Chance Gems'!

The idea for this collection has been rattling around in my head for a couple of years now. When I first mentioned it to Jenna she was instantly on board. It has been a long time coming, lots of planning, talking to suppliers, designing and making to bring it all together and we're so excited to finally share it with the world. This is just the start and we will continue to add to the collection over the coming weeks, months and years :)

First off - what are 'Second Chance Gems'?

Second chance gems are stones that may have been overlooked because they're flawed in some way.

Common imperfections can be inclusions such as growth lines, bubbles, inclusions and minor cleaves. There are also other natural occurrences such as silt and colour banding that are easily detectable to the naked eye.

These stones may not have turned out as expected on the cutting table but are still stable and suitable for jewellery.

To us their imperfections are what give them character and set them apart from other stones on the market. We equate it to the ugly vegetable movement. Just because they're not perfect doesn't mean they aren't beautiful, unique and useful!

Sometimes these stones might be discarded. Sometimes they may simply stay with a supplier for years (or even decades) before the right buyer comes along. Se we've built a platform, bring them out into the world and creating something truly unique!

Secondly - Why?

Because they excite us! As designers we love to find quirky stones that get our creative juices flowing. Maybe they have a flaw that can be hidden with a certain setting style. Maybe they have a unique characteristic that we can imitate or enhance with a little flourish of detail. Maybe we just love the colour and the way the light hits that one specific inclusion!

Whatever the imperfection may be we love being able to flip the design process on its head. Rather than starting with a concept and finding the stones to fit we get to choose a stone that speaks to us and create something beautiful around it :)

Lastly - are they ethical?

As always, we only work with suppliers who responsibly source and cut their gems.

In addition, as with recycled metals, we are firm believers that there is a staggering amount of resources that have already been extracted from the earth. And if we can use materials already in circulation rather than adding to demand for future mining projects that is always a win to us.

BONUS - They are cheaper!

As you may have already guessed, these stones are often discounted due to their imperfections. This can help to keep the overall price down, or it can mean a much larger stone can be used. Or more accent stones. Or engraving/detailing can be added. We love the freedom and possibilities they allow us!

Jenna and I are so excited to release this new collection. It will build as we continue to unearth new stock from our suppliers and the designs will evolve with the unique characteristics that we come across. We hope you love it as much as we do and you too can be a part of the Second Chance movement!
